The story of the Dreamettes, then the Dreams, then Deena Jones and the Dreams as told in the hit Broadway musical, Dreamgirls follows the same rule. A thinly disguised tale of The Supremes and Motown records, Dreamgirls is both a time capsule view of an era in pop music, and a fabulous showcase for vocal talent. Dreamgirls: Music From The Motion Picture is all of this and fantastic production values. The soundtrack is one of the best movie musical CDs ever produced. Twenty-five years ago (seems like yesterday) Dreamgirls was winning Tonys, the film certainly puts the property in line for Oscar consideration.

The highlight is Jennifer Hudson as Effie. She delivers the show-stopper, "One Night Only" in grand style. Even through the speakers in your den, she brings down the house. Hudson, an American Idol finalist joins a star studded cast that includes Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Beyonce. Lauded by the New York Film Critics Circle as Best Supporting Actress for her trouble, Hudson gives the performance of a lifetime and sends a pretty clear signal to the world that she's arrived. She's surrounded by incredible talent here, and her energy and talent makes her stand out in a very big crowd. It might be the new flavor syndrome at work, but I think we're gonna be hearin' from her.

Bill Condon directed and wrote the screenplay for the movie version, and follows Tom Eyen's script pretty closely. The film includes the bulk of the Broadway show score, with the addition of a few new tunes by the show's composer, Henry Krieger. Beyonce gets one of these, "Listen." It's a great vehicle for her, and helps round out the Deena character. This is the tale of three divas, after all, and they all sing their hearts out. When Eddie Murphy's character, Jimmy "Thunder" Early gets funky, it's right in the pocket. Delivered in a total "Memphis Soul Stew" style, Murphy has tons of authentic funky stuff goin' on. Who woulda thunk it? Eddie can really funk it.

That Jamie Foxx can sing soul music is no surprise, and anything that gives us a chance to hear him throw down is good. "When I First Saw You" is a touching ballad, that let's Foxx open his heart and his pipes. "Steppin' To The Bad Side" has more ensemble vocals, and a mean Curtis Mayfield feel, and it really shows Jamie's stuff off. It also gives plenty of room to Jimmy Early and The Dreamettes. The title track brings the whole Dream trio to the fore, and gives them a classic disco beat. Donna Summer move over, the Dreamettes are back. Dreamgirls is one of the best CDs of its kind ever made. Solid production, solid talent and a great set of tunes make it worth hearing.
