Alexandre (Vincent Perez) has been through the cycle of seeing the initial passion in romantic encounters burn off and having the relationship become routine and boring. He thinks that this happens for two reasons: the courtship and wooing dance ends, and mere sex enters the picture. He is determined to prevent this cycle from happening with his latest love-interest, a sexy young woman named Fanfan (Sophie Marceau). However, despite the delightful, romantic and inventive ways he discovers for them to spend time together, Fanfan finds his refusal to go to bed with her increasingly irritating; their burgeoning relationship is seriously jeopardized by Alexandre's attachment to his plan. This film is based on the director's best-selling novel, which was translated into almost two dozen languages.

Alexandre 25 ans est sur le point d'épouser Laura même s'il a le sentiment de former avec elle un vieux couple avant l'âge. Il va bientôt faire la rencontre de Fanfan, chez Ti et Maud et complètement succomber à son charme. Il va alors tenter de la séduire sans lui dire qu'il aime, sans que l'espoir ne vienne se mêler à l'appréhension du premier baisé., il veut autre chose...

Fanfan constitue l'adaptation au cinéma du troisième roman d'Alexandre Jardin publié en 1990. il décide lui même de réaliser cette histoire qui sort des lieux communs sur le couple et la séduction. Il choisit pour interpréter ses deux héros romanesques des temps modernes Sophie Marceau et Vincent Perez. Leur histoire à l'écran peu conventionnelle et légère nous entraîne dans un rêve éveillé où le charme et la comédie se mêlent et s'entremêlent sans qu'aucune de ces deux notions ne viennent contrarier l'autre.

C'est d'amour dont il s'agit, un véritable conte de fée qui n'a de prise avec la réalité que par l'intermédiaire de Fanfan dans un premier temps. Peu à peu, les deux conceptions fusionnent vers l'inéluctable rapprochement. Jalousie, charmes et séduction émaillent chaque scène du long métrage où l'on se réjouit de voir ces deux êtres épris l'un de l'autre se tourner autour comme pour mieux s'imprégner de la naissance d'une belle histoire d'amour. Alexandre Jardin ne s'embarrasse pas de conventions inutiles ou d'idées reçues, il se contente de laisser ses comédiens s'exprimer sans artifices ni faux-semblant.
