Manchester's 'I am Kloot' have been all too easily pigeon-holed into the nu-acoustic stool-gazing movement along with fellow Mancunian strummers Elbow and Alfie. Perhaps this doesn't do justice to their cabaret, jazz-tinged brand of pop. After a couple of singles for Uglyman Records, their debut album 'Natural History' (for the We love You / Wall of Sound label) sounds incredibly contemporary and mature for a band barely two years old.

Perhaps this can be put down to the fact that main-man Johnny Bramwell has lived a bit. After busking the streets of Paris, Athens and San Fransisco and shacking up in a caravan in North Wales he eventually returned to his native Manchester to a job as a promoter. Here he was joined by Pete Jobson (on bass guitar) and Andy Hargreaves (drums) through contacts made while putting on local acts. The band made their live debut in the Autumn of '99 and now, two years down the line, the Kloot sound has matured to the extent that making comparisons with luminaries such as The La's and The Go Betweens is far from ludicrous.

Bramwell's ability to pen twisted kitchen-sink tales of humdrum urban life and unrequited love, delivered in his characteristic scally drawl and coupled with his barbed one-liners make it one of this year's essential long players.

Two years on from their first release and being shoved under the collective woolly hat of the "new acoustic movement", I Am Kloot prove that, like many of their turn-of-the-century contemporaries, there's a lot more to them than introspective acoustic strumathons and scruffy Manchurian accents. From the whimsical romance of "From Your Favourite Sky" ("Who am I to dare to pull the stars from your favourite sky?" croons John Bramwell) to the the lo-fi rumblings of "Life in the Day", this is distorted British folk infused with a crusty northern accent and trickling melodies. "Untitled No. 1" demonstrates their ethos admirably, benefiting from a lazy but essential melody that the dirty, parched beast of "Life in the Day" seems to lack. (That's surprising, as Ian Broudie has produced this along with several others here.) The melodic drought clears up though and the songs are free to reveal their character, imagination and scope, following country lanes of heartbreak and dusty tracks leading to romantic regrets, with "Here for the World" sounding like it could have been written and performed by Bono (at least in terms of the wry, sardonic delivery anyway). "We've no reminders / No old photograph / Did you come for the money / Will you leave for the lack?" Bramwell asks, rhetorically. In fact, there's more Snow Patrol and Johnny Cash here than Elbow. I Am Kloot is a black piece of work, ambitious and experienced--the tale of a weary traveller, sick with the world, but with the glory of it reflected in his tired eyes. Against the odds, I Am Kloot have managed to produce a classic, individual album of their own eccentric styling. --Cortman Virtue

The qualities that first drew fans to I Am Kloot are still intact on "Gods and Monsters". Their's is a brutal yet charming cinematic world which mixes romance and tragedy, vulnerable human warmth and raw muscular aggression. Like Edith Piaf they deliver tales of life??s harsh realities with passion. Like Leonard Cohen and Elbow their music has a touching melancholy twist. And like Badly Drawn Boy they are no strangers to catchy, sparsely arranged pop songs.

Kloot know the emotional power of space and subtlety in music. And Bramwell??s lyrics - sung with a voice not unlike Damon Gough??s - show that he knows the poetry of rainy late-night bus shelters and chip shop queues and the sadness that is the call for last orders. Indeed it??s his snapshots of warts??n??all humanity which touch the listener deeply. As the bands press release says ??I Am Kloot are a Harold Pinter real deal to everyone else??s overblown, Cecil B de Mille mock-ups.?

Scene stealers here include the gentle lollop of recent single "Over My Shoulder", the visceral and sinister tale of murder, witchcraft and revenge that is "An Ordinary Girl", the twangy guitar "The Stars Look Familiar", the shambolic meaty rocker "Sand and Glue" and the jazzy, rough-edged feel of "Strange Without You".

Hell, it??s all rather marvellous, but it??s "Avenue Of Hope" and its apparent tale of lost hope which really tugs at the heart strings and is proof alone that Bramwell is one of our finest songwriters. ??Don??t let me falter, don??t let me hide, don??t let someone else decide just who or what I will become?, he sighs, quietly defiant to a sixties noir film feel of gentle acoustic guitar, piano and muted trumpet. Not a dry eye in the house...

I Am Kloot BBC Radio 1 John Peel Sessions (Skinny Dog) "Manchester 3-piece I Am Kloot have been playing their eerie dark numbers for over a decade now, with the "Peel Sessions" picking pieces from across their three albums as well as previously unreleased gems. This collection makes clear that their main themes of death, inadequacy and most things hopeless have barely changed over the decade. ??There??s blood on your legs / I love you?, Johnny Bramwell sings over the spooky black jazz of "Twist". "Stop", with its unsettling intro worthy of Nick Cave, tells of jealousy. ??You think you??re lovely / I know that you??re wrong / God made me ugly / So don??t string me along?. Heavy stuff indeed. "From Your Favourite Sky" is devoid of drums, with the slightly flamenco and slightly medieval guitar chilling the atmosphere even further. Here the band sounds more heart wrecked than ever. Even when the drums do come tumbling, as on "Life In A Day", the band sounds like the Stone Roses on a death trip. A seriously melancholy yet utterly delicate and beautiful decade indeed."
