With his raw style of filmmaking, Maurice Pialat has been called the John Cassavetes of French cinema, and the scorching À nos amours is one of his greatest achievements. In a revelatory film debut, the dynamic, fresh-faced Sandrine Bonnaire plays Suzanne, a fifteen-year-old Parisian who embarks on a sexual rampage in an effort to separate herself from her overbearing, beloved father (played with astonishing magnetism by Pialat himself), ineffectual mother, and brutish brother. A tender character study that can erupt in startling violence, À nos amours is one of the high-water marks of eighties French cinema.















"The only time I'm happy is when I'm with a guy," says Suzanne, (Sandrine Bonnaire) a promiscuous and directionless teenager. Suzanne's parents are splitting up; her brother beats her as a disciplinary gesture in her father's absence; and her mother has control over nothing. Suzanne hangs out with her friends; sleeps with anyone she is attracted to (except the boy that loves her); and returns home for knock down, drag out fights with her older brother and mother. The last 30 minutes of the film skips quickly into Suzanne's life after marriage and jumps yet again to her life after divorce. The only person Suzanne loves is her father; perhaps because he is the only person who understands and unconditionally loves her. Fine direction from Maurice Pialat who also plays Suzanne's father. Excellent acting from most of the cast saves a somewhat meandering and overwrought script. (IMDB comment)

Incapaz de entregarse emocionalmente a su pretendiente, la joven Suzanne (interpretada por Sandrine Bonnaire, en su primera y excepcional incursión cinematográfica), no duda en acostarse con un americano al que conoce en una cálida noche estival. A partir de este momento la joven se entregará con pasión a furtivos encuentros sexuales con diversos hombres, aunque eludiendo el amor y enmascarando sus emociones. En estos affaires Suzanne hallará una vía de escape a los tormentos que padece en casa, en la que convive con una madre histérica (Evelyne Ker), un padre que pronto desaparecerá de escena (Maurice Pialat), y un hermano autoritario y violento (Dominique Besnehard), incapaz de tomar las riendas paternas... Memorable film sobre la educación sentimental de una adolescente a partir de la prodigiosa captura de sus gestos, sus miradas, sus sonrisas y sus silencios.











Puisque son père (Maurice Pialat) a quitté le foyer avec armes et fracas, la laissant aux prises avec une mère hystérique (Evelyne Ker) et un frère aîné protecteur et volontiers violent (Dominique Besnehard), Suzanne (Sandrine Bonnaire) tente de trouver le bonheur ailleurs, chez les garçons. À quinze ans, la jeune fille passe en effet d’un homme à l’autre avec une facilité déconcertante…



Maurice Pialat ne s’en est jamais défendu : plus qu’un film sur l’adolescence, À nos amours est avant tout un hymne d’amour à Sandrine Bonnaire, actrice débutante de 15 ans dont la personnalité et le talent inné l’ont subjugué dès les premiers essais. Lumineuse, la jeune comédienne irradie en effet littéralement dans ce film chaotique touché par la grâce où le cinéma et la vie n’ont jamais été si étroitement liés. Le public et la critique lui feront un triomphe. À nos amours remportera en 1983 le prix Louis-Delluc et le César du Meilleur Film tandis que la performance de Sandrine Bonnaire lui vaudra le César du meilleur espoir féminin.
