King Lear, old and tired, divides his kingdom among his daughters, giving great importance to their protestations of love for him. When Cordelia, youngest and most honest, refuses to idly flatter the old man in return for favor, he banishes her and turns for support to his remaining daughters. But Goneril and Regan have no love for him and instead plot to take all his power from him. In a parallel, Lear's loyal courtier Gloucester favors his illegitimate son Edmund after being told lies about his faithful son Edgar. Madness and tragedy befall both ill-starred fathers.











Much reviled at the time of its release, this heavily cut, Danish co-production horrified critics with its bleak as possible take on what some consider the world's greatest play. Obviously influenced by Nordic films from Dryer to Bergman, Peter Brook shot this as a medieval horror show; and Pauline Kael called it his "Night Of The Living Dead." While certainly unfair to the scope of the Bard's vision, the film is undeniably fascinating. In the best parts it comes alive with a vivid wickedness, you can certainly see how Lear's daughter's came to hate his guts! So, even if it does mutilate a classic, this film is pretty amazing and highly recommendable. A dark product of it's own time, you will scarcely see a Lear like this again. IMDB comment











El anciano Rey Lear decide repartir su reino entre sus hijas. Confundido por la falsa adulación de las dos mayores, Goneril y Regan, a pesar del auténtico amor filial y la sinceridad de la más joven Cordelia, con deslealtad, deshereda a ésta y reparte sus tierras entre aquellas. Cordelia parte para casarse con el Rey de Francia. Mientras tanto el Conde de Kent, que ha intentado hacer entrar en razón al Rey, es desterrado. Al poco tiempo Lear comprende que sus hijas sólo ambicionaban su reino y se ve abandonado por ambas.

Brook riprende una sua regia teatrale dell’opera e ambienta la tragedia negli esterni danesi, in lande ghiacciate in cui la disperazione e la negatività dell’originale si mescolano alla rigidità ambientale che porta l’uomo a perdersi tra la sua follia e il duro inverno danese. La buona regia di Brook è affiancata dall’ottimo lavoro svolto da Georges Wakhevic e Adèle Angard, rispettivamente scenografo e costumista, che si ispirano all’iconografia e alla cultura eschimese per creare una terra senza tempo, un ambiente perfetto per la perdita, lo smarrimento di Lear e per la sua discesa verso la morte.

Superlativo il cast, in cui spicca Paul Scofield che da vita ad un Re Lear molto intenso, diviso tra nobiltà e follia.
