Born in Belfast in 1898, C.S. Lewis is best known today for writing the beloved Chronicles of Narnia books, which blended magical fantasy with powerful Christian allegory. The first of these classics, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe , will hit movie screens on Dec. 9 in a big-budget adaptation from Walt Disney Pictures.

But Lewis was much more than just a children's author. He was a scholar, teacher and author of extraordinary depth and range â??? one who, in his lifetime, went from being an outspoken opponent of Christianity to one of its most impassioned and influential defenders.

â??The Making of a Mind: The Life of C.S. Lewis,â? is hosted by author and lecturer Os Guinness.

Many of those who treasure the Narnia books today know little of their author and the events that shaped his life. Day of Discovery follows Lewis from the trenches of the First World War to Oxford University â??? where he forged a lasting friendship with Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien â??? and through a long spiritual struggle whose culmination would change his life utterly.

â??The Making of a Mindâ? reveals the soul behind the great intellect, while exploring the lasting influence of such books as The Screwtape Letters , Mere Christianity , The Problem of Pain and The Chronicles of Narnia. The program also recalls movingly the final years of Lewis's life, and the challenges that led to what many consider his most personal work, A Grief Observed.
