1988.Suck on the Pastels

Suck on the Pastels compiles a number of singles released by the band from 1983-1985, as well as a three-song BBC session from 1984. In the liner notes, Stephan Pastel alludes to the general apathy of the band throughout this period, also explaining the general poor recording conditions in which most of these songs were birthed. The band's laconic tendencies were matched by their arrogant tendencies ('We thought we were God,' notes Pastel in the liners), so there's definite attitude and substance, albeit in patchy doses. The results are rather uneven, but there are some moments of undeniable greatness. The seven-minute drone pop of 'Baby Honey' remains one of Creation's earliest gems, mixing the Byrds, the Velvet Underground, detached vocals, and a lazy near-funk rhythm in the best possible way. 'Couldn't Care Less' and 'I'm Alright With You' also rate with the Pastels' finest. The rhythm box and childish lyrics to 'I Wonder Why' provide the perfect backdrop to a rumpus room filled with joyous toddlers. The BBC session is scattered throughout the disc, showing what the band is capable of in proper working conditions. Suck On isn't the first place to go for the Pastels, but it's a decent snapshot of their youthful beginnings.

1995.Mobile Safari

On Mobile Safari, the Pastels stretched out to an American audience with their calm and reflective style of blissful indie pop. Stephan Pastel remained the band's primary songwriter, while Katrina Mitchell (drums) and Aggi Wright (bass) began to contribute more this time around. Mitchell sings bittersweet and awkward lead vocals on 'Mandarin' and 'Token Collecting.' Her untrained crooning is part of the allure of her songs. Wright leads on vocals on the festive 'Yoga' and composed the instrumental 'Mobile Deli.' Pastel leads the way on the rest of the songs with his dry and deep vocal style. His delivery speeds up from its normally sluggish pace on the toe-tapping 'Classic Line-Up' and 'Strategic Gear.' He collaborated with former member David Keegan on 'Exploration Team' and 'Flightpaths to Each Other.' The whole trio of Pastel, Mitchell, and Wright collaborated on the disc's final track, the sublimely cool and horn-filled 'Worlds of Possibility.' Gerard Love added guitar and vocals to some of the tracks, while Luna's Dean Wareham also appeared as a guest guitarist. Mobile Safari was recorded at CAVA Sound Workshops and Stuffhouse Studios, both in the band's home of Glasgow, Scotland. Seattle's Up Records released the disc in 1995. On the strength of the album, the band toured the U.S. with Yo la Tengo.

1997.Illumination

Illumination finds the Pastels in a similar mood to its predecessor, Mobile Safari. Scaling back the snappy production and crisp guitars of their earlier releases, the group crafts a collection of subdued, lovely melodies in the vein of the Velvet Underground's third album. While the Pastels lack Lou Reed's lyricism or the Velvets' assured experimentalism, the hushed ambience and sighing melodies of Illumination make it a charming listen.

1998.Illuminati

On paper, Illuminati looks like it would be an amazing collection of remixes. With 15 assorted artists remixing twelve different songs by The Pastels, one would think there'd be a great deal of variation between the remixes, especially considering the talent of the remixers. But Illuminati ultimately falls a bit flat, as artists as diverse as My Bloody Valentine, Cornelius, Stereolab, To Rococo Rot, Future Pilot AKA, and Jim O'Rourke, among others, mostly play things too close to the vest. The result is that the tracks sound remarkably similar, and, for the most part, like white-washed versions of the original songs. It doesn't help that three songs make multiple appearances in various forms. Some tracks end up working no better than aural wallpaper. My Bloody Valentine, which makes two appearances, seems to be the chief influence of most of the other remixers; the first remix is too short to leave much of an impression, so ardent fans won't be as happy as they expected to be upon finding out that two new My Bloody Valentine creations are included. The best moments come from Cornelius, Future Pilot AKA, John McEntire, and Ian Carmichael. The Cornelius remix of 'Windy Hill' is as interesting and exciting as anything from his Fantasma album; it's pretty, touching, and accomplished. Ian Carmichael turns The Viaduct into an even more gentle, stop-start ballad, full of interesting sounds and sweeping, sampled guitars. Future Pilot AKA's additional work on 'Rough Riders' adds more to the original song than most of the other remixers combined; the song winds up sounding like a frazzled, joyous play on the original. John McEntire's remix of 'Remote Climbs' is more mature and interesting than most of the work he's done with Tortoise; it's clear that he respected the original version, while still setting out to make a near-symphonic, electronic reworking. Too many artists simply distill the Pastels' light sounds without crafting anything compelling in the process. Either they were pressed for time or inspiration, or they just wanted to have their names printed along side the other remixers; the lesser tracks mostly just sample instrumental moments in a cut and paste fashion. Stereolab appear to be doing a Cornelius impersonation and not succeeding. My Bloody Valentine adds atmospheric elements to 'Cycle,' but the remix is nowhere near the caliber of anything on Loveless. Jim O'Rourke unleashes an army of inappropriate, misguided strings on his remix of 'Leaving This Island.' Illuminati works in small doses; it's not an album that asks to be repeated as a whole. Since most of the original songs were taken from Illumination, one of the weaker full-lengths from the Pastels, it shouldn't be that much of surprise that this collection of remixes only takes flight in spurts. Whether it's the source material or simply the lackadaisical approach of many of the remixers, Illuminati flickers out instead of burning bright.

2003.The Last Great Wilderness

The Last Great Wilderness is the soundtrack to the movie of the same name. The Pastels provide background music and two songs. Pastels diehards might be disappointed at the lack of vocals (and the fact that one of the two songs, a lilting cover of Sly & the Family Stone's 'Everybody Is a Star,' is recycled from the Geographic label compilation from 2002) but will still be pleased at the typically affecting sounds found within. The background pieces are mostly short and very atmospheric, showing that the group has a firm grasp on the art of film music composition. Three of the songs ('Winter Driving,' 'Flora's Theme,' and 'Flora Again') are brief fragments of eerie vocal loops and bells, while the rest of the pieces are longer and quite nice: 'Wilderness Theme' (and 'Wilderness End Theme') is a beautiful chiming song full of bells, horns, and wheezing synths, 'Vincente's Theme' is a dramatic ballad with a haunting trumpet solo, and 'Charlie's Theme is built around humming synth noise, reverbed piano, and gently plucked guitars. Along with the wonderful cover of 'Everybody Is a Star,' the other 'song' here is 'I Picked a Flower,' featuring the vocals and songwriting acumen of Jarvis Cocker. The song is a bopping, ultra-poppy slice of sunshine that features some typically sleazy Cocker lyrics. The Last Great Wilderness is not an essential Pastels purchase by any means, but it is a nice stopgap between albums and more importantly a solid stab at soundtrack composition

1995.Worlds of Possibility

The Pastels were riding a peak of creativity in the mid-'90s. Their album of 1995, Mobile Safari, is one of the band's best and so is the Worlds of Possibility EP. The first track is one of the truly great songs from that album, the bubbling 'Worlds of Possibility,' remixed with an extra dose of dubby sunshine by Ian Carmichael (producer of the Orchids and member of One Dove). The rest of the EP shows off the dark and light sides of the group. 'Photogram' is a grinding, dissonant track with very aggressive guitars and an impassioned Aggi Wright vocal, 'Ever Far' is a sparse and melancholic ballad with a moody vocal from Stephan Pastel. These two are balanced by the almost insanely bright and sparkling lo-fi version of the Groove's bubblegum soul classic 'Love, It's Getting Better.' Katrina Mitchell's vocals here (and on 'Worlds' as well) are lighter than air and sweeter than a pixie stick. The Worlds of Possibility EP is the sound of the Pastels at their finest.

Track list:
01.Worlds of Possibility
02.Photogram
03.Ever Far
04.Love it's Getting Better

1995.Yoga

The Pastels were riding a wave of creativity in the mid-'90s. Their album of 1995, Mobile Safari, is one of the bands best and 'Yoga' is one of the standout tracks. The big, ringing guitars and rollicking beat wouldn't be out of place on a Teenage Fanclub record (which is fitting seeing as the Fannies were hugely influenced by the Pastels) and Aggi Wright's tender vocal sounds great surrounded by the background harmonies. The song comes in two flavors on the EP: the album track with Aggi's vocal or the track only available here with Stephan Pastel on vocals. The other two tracks are fine examples of the band's open-hearted sound. 'Boardwalkin'' is a collaboration with Some Velvet Sidewalk's Al Larson that sounds nothing like a classic surf song but is somehow reminiscent of one just the same, complete with a typically woozy vocal from Stephan. 'Winter Olympic Glory' is a slight Aggi-sung tune with a screaming guitar solo buried deep in the mix. The Yoga EP is not one of the Pastels' most essential releases but it is definitely worth looking for if you are devoted to the band's unmistakable charms.

Track list:
01.Yoga
02.Boardwalkin'
03.Winter Olympic Glory
04.Yoga (album version)
